Congratulations to Bryan Baxter, who received the 2019 Morrison Award! OUNC awarded Bryan during a heartfelt ceremony attended by Jarrod Morrison’s family and established members of the PGE community who knew and worked with Jarrod during his career.

Bryan Baxter has been a leader in Oregon damage prevention for more than a decade. His creative ideas and respected passion aided in the delivery of the 811 message statewide. Even after moving from the damage prevention department at NW Natural, Bryan continued to work closely with the councils he had supported for so long. His efforts as an ambassador of Oregon 811 continue to influence new industry members and will for some time.

Over 135 kids participated and proudly hung their drawings on our 811 trailer.

We want to thank our volunteers from NW Natural who helped us at our 811 booth while thousands of attendees stopped by our booth.

Oregon Utility Notification Center / OUNC was a proud sponsor of this years Starlight Parade on June 1st.

There was 325,000 spectators that lined the streets of downtown Portland to watch the second-largest illuminated parade in the Northwest. We were able to share the 811 message to a very large audience!

A huge thank you to One Call Concepts, Inc. and 811 On The Road for bringing the 811 Car to be in the parade. Another thank you to the wonderful volunteers that helped hand out 811 promo items and walked the parade!

The Oregon Utility Notification Center / OUNC partnered with NW Natural at this years career day at the Career Technical Education Center in Salem, OR!

Tobin Werner, NW Natural, shared natural gas safety information as well as job opportunities in the industry with the students. We also shared the importance of calling 811 before any digging project!

OUNC was a proud sponsor of the first NWUCA Construction Career Day held at NW College of Construction.

Students from Sam Barlow, Parkrose, Washougal, Reynolds, David Douglas, and Franklin high schools attended.

Each activity station gave the students demonstrations on installing piping, virtual reality equipment simulation, and other job related skills. After stopping by our 811 booth, they learned the importance of always Calling 811 before any excavation/digging project.

Oregon PUC: 8/11 is ‘National Safe Digging Day’

SALEM, Ore. – The Oregon Public Utility Commission is reminding homeowners and professional contractors of the importance of calling 811 before starting any outdoor digging project. Every six minutes, an underground utility line is damaged because someone decided to dig without calling 811 first. Striking a line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages.

“August 11 (8/11) is a convenient way to promote safe digging and the use of the free 811 service,” said Lori Koho, Utility Safety and Reliability Administrator for the PUC. “Every digging project, no matter how large or small, requires a call to 811 at least two business days before digging to eliminate the risk of striking an underground utility line.”

When calling 811, homeowners and contractors are connected to the Oregon Utility Notification Center (OUNC), the local one-call center, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig. Professional locators are then sent to the requested digging site to mark the underground lines with color-coded flags, spray paint or both.

“Utility lines need to be properly marked because even when digging only a few inches below the surface, the risk of striking an underground utility line exists,” said Koho. “811 helps maintain the safety of Oregon residents and the reliability of utility services that we all appreciate.”
